U.N.: Tasers Are A Form Of Torture

November 25th, 2007 . by TexasFred

(CBS/AP) A United Nations committee said Friday that use of Taser weapons can be a form of torture, in violation of the U.N. Convention Against Torture.

Use of the electronic stun devices by police has been marked with a sudden rise in deaths - including four men in the United States and two in Canada within the last week.

Canadian authorities are taking a second look at them, and in the United States, there is a wave of demands to BAN them.

The U.N. Committee Against Torture referred Friday to the use of TaserX26 weapons which Portuguese police has acquired. An expert had testified to the committee that use of the weapons had “proven risks of harm or death.”

“The use of TaserX26 weapons, provoking extreme pain, constituted a form of torture, and that in certain cases it could also cause death, as shown by several reliable studies and by certain cases that had happened after practical use,” the committee said in a statement.

U.N.: Tasers Are A Form Of Torture

OK, that does it for me, the UN said Tasers are torture, so, NO MORE TASERS, just go ahead and beat the crap out of em or shoot em, but for Gods sake don’t use a normally non-lethal method of subduing an agitated or violent offender, we can’t have that now can we??

What the hell, why even shoot the bad guys?? Just let em run wild, it doesn’t matter what the police do, there’s going to be some asshats that are always at the ready to condemn the cops, even if a cop gives his life in the line of duty, some asshat will find fault in the way he did it…

The U.N. is the most useless organization that has ever existed, and I honestly believe that given the opportunity, they would love to totally govern the USA, and with the Globalist designs a certain U.S. president has, the idea isn’t all that far fetched…

The U.N. seeks to disarm our citizens and now condemns Tasers as torture, just another move towards total disarmament of the American people, it’s easier for U.N. forces to take over that way…

EDIT TO ADD: NP213 has posted a video of himself being Tased during his certification process, it’s in the comments section of THIS post, NP213 is my Son, I KNOW that this video is real and I know that his comments and his belief IN the Taser are real and sincere…

If some of the women of these 3rd world countries all had tasers there would a lot less rape by UN soldiers…

The UN: Leading the way in political correctness, corruption, terrorism, socialism, penis erections, and will be solely responsible for the mushroom cloud phase of WW3.

The only thing I don’t like about tasers is the ridiculous reaction the media and the uninformed public tend to have.

There is not one case where the cause of death is the taser - not a single one. If anyone can prove me wrong on that - feel free to do so, I’m not afraid of being corrected.

I’ve been tazed and it’s not that big of a deal, it does not even hurt as bad as everyone seems to thing. Now don’t get me wrong, it does not feel good - but mainly you just can’t move.

The “deaths” mentioned in the “reliable studies” are the same type of things that happen when a suspect is high on drugs or has some sort of medical condition already. You know the same type of cases where the person dies after a choke hold, pepper spray, falling down etc. Correlation cannot be validly used as evidence of a causal relationship between the variables. If we could do so it would be a lot easier to simply say that they died because they committed a crime or resisted the police. Or we could say that the hundreds upon hundreds of thousands of people who have not died after being tased are evidence that they are not lethal.

Great post Fred, I got a couple of friends to digg it.

Oh and screw the UN! Someone should o around the General Assembly tasing diplomats.

You said it Gunz! Hear! Hear!

Listening to the drivel that spews from the UN is a form of torture.

    Screw ‘em!

  6. comment number 6 by: jo

    yeah…what Velvet said !
What, pray tell are the police supposed to do if they can’t tazer, can’t shoot, and have to keep their hands behind their back and check their intellect at the door…is this what US citizens want ? I think not. I want my sense of safety back. I want to know if I’m being mugged, an officer can and would stop it. Now I have to worry that they’re gonna have to look up UN rules and regs before stopping crime. I’m really ticked off about this bullsh**

  7. comment number 7 by: BobF

Screw the UN! As long as the tazer works then it needs to be used. When it stops working then the cops need to go back to bullets. 230 grains of jacketed hollow point will do nicely.

    What BobF said…. :)
It is sad what our law enforcement officers have to put up with — and I do hope this nonsense from the UN is ignored.
We need to pull out of the UN and send them packing - Venezuela would be a nice place, I’ve said it before.

Here’s another good point, every officer that carries a Taser is trained in it’s proper use and only becomes certified to use the Taser AFTER they have been tased, and I don’t mean a little tickle, I mean a FULL CHARGE 5 second blast, the officer KNOWS what the perp is feeling when tased because they have been tased themselves…

It’s a damn good thing weapons qualifications aren’t that tough, do you see where I’m going with that?? :?

  10. comment number 10 by: Brian Gregory

Come on, now. We all know the UN is a crackpot. Serious question here (and I plan on having this debate over on my blog, check it out): is any torture acceptable? Can we justify using torturous methods on captured enemy combatants? I really want to hear the opinions of others before I make a final decision for myself. Thanks.

  11. comment number 11 by: RTaylor

BrianG - it all depends upon your definition of “torture”, I suppose…. Tasing a criminal certainly isn’t torture and neither is waterbording of terrorists. Unfortunately, there are those who think if you look at them crosseyed, it’s torture (ok, I’m being sarcastic, but you get the idea…)

In the interest of ‘Fair and Balanced’ blogging:

Third Taser Stun Gun Victim Dies in Past Three Weeks in Canada

VANCOUVER, British Columbia — A Canadian man died Saturday, four days after police used a Taser stun-gun on him because he reportedly was acting erratically in a store, police said. He was the third person to die in recent weeks in Canada after being shocked by the hand-held weapon.

Robert Knipstrom, 36, died in a hospital after two officers used pepper spray, a Taser and their batons to subdue the British Columbia resident. Police earlier said Knipstrom was extremely agitated, aggressive and combative with the two officers who responded. He was conscious and speaking when he was taken to the hospital.

The cause of death has yet to be determined. Although a Taser was used against Knipstrom, it was not immediately clear what role, if any, it played in his death, said Inspector Brendan Fitzpatrick.

Investigations into Knipstrom’s death have been launched separately by the British Columbia Coroner’s Office and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, police said at a news conference Saturday.

He was pepper sprayed, he was struck with a baton, he was tased, and until there is an autopsy done NO ONE can state that this guy died because he was tased…

Who knows what other circumstances were involved, or hidden health problems, drugs, booze, who knows??

Here’s the facts, if you mess up badly enough to get tased, you have a 99.9% chance of surviving to be a fool another day, take the taser away and leave the officers with the option of beating your ass or shooting you, well, only a moron would miss the point I am trying to make, let’s see how many morons we have reading here…

Texas Fred: ah hell, take away the Taser, I think that’s GREAT!! That’s one LESS thing I have to think about using from my belt, and I can jump from the baton DIRECTLY to my handgun without having to worry about what’s in between on the force continuum. I say: you bet. TAKE the stupid Taser! It certainly makes MY life easier.

Here again, we look at the use of tasers. Tasers DO hurt. I have the video link if anyone would like to see me getting certified with the taser. It was the most painful 5 seconds of my life! But, it was 5 seconds.

If I had a choice, I would much rather be tased than pepper sprayed. The effects of pepper spray last for hours, even after the proper decontamination steps have been taken.

The taser, as I said, is 5 seconds. Granted, during those 5 seconds, it feels like you are surrounded by 1 million people hitting you with hammers over every square inch of your body at the same time, but when it’s over, it’s over.

If I tase a suspect, and he is still non-compliant after the first ride, you bet your ass he will be tased again. I am not that big a guy. I’m 5′9″ and 200 pounds. This is average some might say, but when you’re having to arrest a 6′4″, 350 pound coke head, like this bastard that we have in my jurisdiction, sometimes a taser is the only way.

Also, there have been times where tasers have allowed a way for a person who needs help to keep living, instead of being killed by an officer.

One of my fellow deputies, a bike patrol officer, had a suspect threatening to kill herself and wielding a knife. Every time someone would get close to her to try to disarm her, she would attempt to slash them. Through the use of the taser, 1) she was not shot and killed, 2) we were able to disarm her without any officers getting cut or sliced, and 3) she was able to be committed and have her mental health evaluated versus being transported by the meat wagon.

People can go on and on about the use of tasers, but, IMO, they need to shut the hell up. Tasers are a safe, effective way of taking a violent suspect into custody.

Oh, another instance for you. There was this one time when I was in a foot pursuit that had lasted about 8 or so minutes. When I finally circled around the suspect, I drew my Springfield XD-40 and commanded him to get on the ground. Do you think he complied? No. He looked at me and literally said, “What the fuck are you gonna do? Shoot me?” I looked at him and said “Nope”. I then drew my Taser X26 and fired. One prong stuck him in the abdomen, and the other one in his chest. He hit the ground and I dropped the taser. During the 5 seconds, I was able to cuff him, and give my back-up an exact location as to where I was. (I was in a sugar cane field just north of US HWY 90 in Jeanerette, La.)

I believe that, as an officer, I should use as little force as NECESSARY to effect an arrest. If that means that I can talk the suspect into turning around, then I will do so. If that doesn’t work, then I will escalate my use of force as the situation dictates.

Just FYI, do you know that in most use of force scales, the taser falls below the expandable baton, or “night stick”?

This is because it is easier to deliver a lethal blow with a baton than it is with a taser.

There have been some reports of people who have pace-makers and things like that being fatally struck with a taser. In my opinion, if the bastard has a pace-maker, he oughta know better.

I could ramble on about this for days, because I am a true believer in the use of the taser. I will let your comments dictate my response.

Here is the link where you can see me being tased at the St. Martin Parish Sheriff’s Office Training Academy.
