Huckabee May Have Gone Too Far

January 1st, 2008 . by TexasFred

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Mike Huckabee may have finally gone too far.

After running an unconventional, surprisingly strong and sometimes strange race to the top tier of the Republican presidential campaign, the former Arkansas governor topped himself Monday with an eyebrow-raising campaign stunt.

He called a news conference to unveil a negative ad that he had just withdrawn from Iowa television stations because, he told a room full of journalists recording the ad, he had a sudden aversion to negative politics. Quite a convenient epiphany.

“If people want to be cynical about it,” Huckabee said, “they can be cynical about it.”

If he loses Iowa’s caucuses on Thursday, New Year’s Eve will forever mark the day Huckabee blew it - the day a group of reporters stopped laughing with the witty Republican and laughed at him.

Analysis: Huckabee May Have Gone Too Far

Huckabee: He graduated magna cum laude from Ouachita Baptist University, completing his bachelor’s degree in Religion in 2½ years before attending Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas where he dropped out after one year. He has two honorary doctoral degrees: a Doctor of Humane Letters, received from John Brown University in 1991, and a Doctor of Laws from Ouachita Baptist University in 1992. SOURCE

Not taking a deliberate swipe at the Religious Right but are they the ones that are giving Hucksterbee this boost in the polls??

Folks, he’s got a degree from Ouachita Baptist, in religion, that’s not a lot to qualify him to lead too much of anything, unless it’s a Baptist picnic on the grounds, if you’re having a bowl of tater salad and some fried yard bird, Hucksterbee is your guy, if you’re running America, we MUST do a lot better than this…

Anyone, and I DO mean ANYONE, can get a degree in Religion for any number of accredited schools, that doesn’t mean they have ANY leadership qualities, it means they have a degree in Religion, that’s all, and it doesn’t even begin to address their true convictions and beliefs, it simply means they have a degree in Religion, and Honorary Degrees mean NOTHING in the grand scheme of things, they are nothing more than an honor, not an earned degree…

We need a strong and religious leader, not one that uses his religion as a shield, but one that uses it as a beacon to lead this nation, and simply holding a degree IN religion doesn’t necessarily get the job done, and for those with short memories, being Governor of Arkansas isn’t the highest qualification a President can post on the resume, can you say Bill?? As in Bill Clinton??

Maybe it’s just me but I don’t think a Governor has what it takes to be POTUS, seriously, look at George Bush, he went into the White House with nothing more than a degree in history from Yale and the experience of having been the Governor of Texas, and his performance has been somewhat less than stellar…

We need strong, sincere and moral leadership now more than ever, and we need leadership that’s had a lot more experience than that gained as a Governor, and in this line I include Romney, what international experience does a Governor truly have?? What international diplomacy has a Governor been forced to engage in?? How many Governors are briefed on world security affairs daily, the classified briefings??

We need someone other than a Governor as POTUS, we need a Senator or a Congressman, a strong businessman, a religious person that has the best interest of America in his heart, not the best way to globalize America and give her away…

That leaves us with 3 viable candidates as I see it, McCain, Thompson and Hunter…

And as many have said, none of that crowd is perfect, no candidate will be, I just hope that America makes the RIGHT decision in ’08, our future, and the futures of our children and grand children depend on it…

Hunter still viable, ya think? I’d like to see him run against Teddy Kennedy: Duncan Hunter vs. Hump’n Dunker

And we both know that Huck’s “surge” was media-driven anyway. Huckabee isn’t the right guy for the reasons you enumerate. I’m glad he’s religious, good for him. But that isn’t even the SLIGHTEST bit of a qualification for the highest office in the land.

Yep, it is the Christian Far right wing that is pushing him. The best thing the GOP could do right now is disassociate the party from the Christian right wing. It lost them an election last fall and looks like it may well lose them the White House. Keep in mind that the Christian right wing were mostly dim-a-crits for years but when the dim-a-crits embraced abortion and Gay rights these people formed the Christian far right and joined with the GOP who catered to them….now the country is paying for it.

And I have always said that the best way to tell its a preacher coming out of a house is to watch him either count the money or zip up his pants.

I agree that a degree in religion does not NECESSARILY qualify him/her to run a country, but then neither does any degree NECESSARILY. A Harvard Law grad may be just as ill-equipped to lead as a Podunk U. Home-Ec grad. Exposure to a great experience does not mean that a person actually learns from that experience. I believe the test of leadership is less about the paper they hold and more about the person they are, what they have accomplished, and their capacity to learn the job. (Really, not a single candidate has experience leading a country, and any experience — whether as senator or governor — will fall short of preparing him/her totally.) I’m not saying I’m voting for Huckabee (I might), but I am saying his lack of participation in the Ivy-League should not disqualify him.

And, I do believe that running a state is much more like running a country than serving in the senate or house.

I agree we need a strong businessman, not necessarily a former Gov. but I don’t think that disqualifies them either. Can you say “Ronald”? :o ) The best businessman in the race is Mitt Romney. He’s a proven leader who has excelled in the real world, outside govt and inside as well. McCain is OK, but old and a well entrenched Washington insider, even if he does go against the party grain at times. You are dead on concerning the Huckster though!!

GuyK you may have always said that but it isn’t always true. But then, I think you know that … at least I hope you do.

Most of the national media is liberal. They’ve done a great job in diluting the republican race by promoting the Huck and McCain as top runners. Huck is the next jimmy Carter, and McCain a 71 year old with temper of a ticking time bomb (great person to have heading up our foreign relations). Both have no chance of beating the liberal medias democratic choice, so their strategic manipulating of ignorant voters is working!
