McCain Says He Could Lose Over War Issue

February 25th, 2008 . by TexasFred

ROCKY RIVER, Ohio (AP) - John McCain said Monday that to win the White House he must convince a war-weary country that U.S. policy in Iraq is succeeding. If he can’t, “then I lose. I lose,” the Republican said. He quickly backed off that remark.

“Let me not put it that stark,” the likely GOP nominee told reporters on his campaign bus. “Let me just put it this way: Americans will judge my candidacy first and foremost on how they believe I can lead the county both from our economy and for national security. Obviously, Iraq will play a role in their judgment of my ability to handle national security.”

“If I may, I’d like to retract ‘I’ll lose.’ But I don’t think there’s any doubt that how they judge Iraq will have a direct relation to their judgment of me, my support of the surge,” McCain added. “Clearly, I am tied to it to a large degree.”

The five-year-old Iraq conflict already is emerging as a fault line in the general election, with the Arizona senator calling for the U.S. military to continue its mission while his Democratic opponents urge speedy withdrawal.

McCain Says He Could Lose Over War Issue

Convince a ‘war weary’ America that U.S. policy in Iraq is succeeding?? Gonna be a tough sale on that one Mr. McCain…

The American people ARE ‘war weary’ Mr. McCain, and if the reasons WHY aren’t obvious to you, then you have no more business being POTUS than Clinton or Obama do…

We have been involved in the fighting in Iraq for a longer period of time than we were directly involved in all of WWII, and yes, I DO realize that we’ve had troops in Korea for 50 some odd years, but since the peace agreement in Korea was signed, and the nation divided, our troops have been on a peacekeeping mission, not a combat mission, and that, a combat mission, is exactly what we are still engaged in with Iraq, regardless of how many ‘Mission Accomplished’ banners fly over the decks of carriers…

We spent years in Vietnam and when we left Vietnam, or, should I say, were pulled out of Vietnam by American politicians, the communists did take over, after all the lost lives, over 54,000 American troops dead and only God knows how many South Vietnamese and North Vietnamese killed, after all the time and money that was wasted, we got our asses kicked out of Vietnam and the communist regime of North Vietnam took over, and look at the complexion of the Vietnam debacle today, Vietnam is one of our stronger trading partners…

As a Vietnam veteran, you should know this, you should know what a protracted engagement like Vietnam does to our nation, and that is exactly what Iraq is, Vietnam without the greenery, and other than oil, very little to make them any kind of strong trading partner…

You Mr. McCain, are a lot closer to the Democrats than you are to REAL Republicans and Conservatives, your stance on immigration and amnesty more than prove that accusation, and your views of Iraq and the idea that we may keep troops there for many years into the future are all the reasons I need to tell you to go to hell, right along with Clinton and Obama, your Senatorial buddies…

I simply can’t believe that the American people have allowed themselves to be placed in this position once again, a vote for the lesser of 2 evils is STILL a vote for evil, and while McCain may be a better choice than Clinton or Obama, let me ask you this, what’s worse, to burn to death or drown??

Either way, you’re dead…

I think McCain limited himself in this fashion; he underestimates many people who view him via the thinnest of his veneers and who don’t understand his past, viewed in terms of Conservatism, NOT in terms of those who mostly couldn’t care less about politics.

We as a nation will lose no matter what. Our only hope is to take the Senate by putting conservatives in office. I didn’t say Republicans in office. Even the Democrats have conservatives hanging their heads over the choices available out of their party.
We may get screwed for four years like a Jimmy Carter, but we better get our stuff together if we don’t want to go for 8 or 12 or more.
We may need to recruit our own candidates because those who volunteer have been greedy looser who are only out for serving themselves. We need unity and discussion among ourselves not predecided candidates thrust upon us by dead parties. I keep hearing people pine away about the problem and taking NO action. We better get to our feet and start making changes or we may not have a country to change.

War? What war? Oil? What oil? Don’t you think we could have laid waste to that country so quickly if this were 1940 and we had people in politicians that did what they did best. With in the year we would have another state and a vast amount of oil to get into China’s pocket.People of this country lost thier love of country and what backbone they had a long time ago. I do not see war bonds. I don’t see people throwing parades. Difference is self. People of this era especially children are taught to think of self. Self sacrifice is not and option and proven by numerous college shootings wher the shooter had timee to reload infront of how many men of the same age that are in war at this time. Are we as Americans weary of the war because it effects us as a whole to make us unsafe or are you just worried you will lose your own little world personally. Please people, think bigger. Most of my friends and I included who have served are looking at bigger picture if only we could get the politicians to let the military do what it needs to do in war. Fight and win. They need history lessons on Vietnam evidently, even McCain.
