ABOARD THE PAPAL PLANE (AP) - Pope Benedict XVI said Tuesday he was “deeply ashamed” of the clergy sexual abuse scandal in the Catholic church and will work to make sure pedophiles don’t become priests.

Benedict was answering questions submitted in advance by reporters aboard a special Alitalia airliner as he was flying from Rome to Washington to begin his first papal pilgrimage to the United States.

“It is a great suffering for the Church in the United States and for the Church in general and for me personally that this could happen,” Benedict said. “It is difficult for me to understand how it was possible that priests betray in this way their mission … to these children.”

It’s difficult for ANY normal person to understand, but normalcy and being a priest in the RCC have very little to do with one another…

Priests aren’t allowed to marry, but they give marital advice, priests aren’t allowed to have children but they give parenting advice and they advise on birth control, or, lack of, and urge Catholics to go forth, be fruitful and multiply in great numbers…

And for some odd reason, pedophiles are drawn to the priesthood like moths to flame, maybe it’s because they are allowed unfettered access to altar boys, maybe it’s because they know that if caught, or exposed, all they will suffer in a transfer to another parish…

“I am deeply ashamed and we will do what is possible so this cannot happen again in the future,” the pope said.

Benedict pledged that pedophiles would not be priests in the Roman Catholic church.

He may be ashamed, he well should be, but even if he never was one of the pedophiles, certainly no one that has spent their entire life in the RCC and risen to his position within the RCC can say that he hasn’t heard about these abuses, and not heard about them for ALL the years he was in the hierarchy of the RCC, so WHY hasn’t he spoken out before?? And WHY hasn’t he already taken drastic measures to remove the perverts from the priesthood??

Actions speak much louder than words, yet words, payoffs and transfers by various Catholic diocese are all we see…

I realize that no Pope can make an absolute guarantee that actions such as those committed by pervert priests will never happen, it would be ridiculous to even think so, by Benedict can make the penalties for those actions so severe that any priest that even remotely thinks of molesting a child will take great pause before doing so, and those that do molest children should not only be removed from the priesthood but should be punished under the most severe laws and penalties available…

If the Pope wants to restore some the faith of American Catholics, that’s a great place to start…
