Mich. boy, 12, killed by gun being cleaned by dad

HOMER, Mich. (AP) - Police say a 12-year-old Michigan boy was shot and killed when a gun being cleaned by his father went off.

Police say Ian Dunn died Tuesday afternoon at the home about 90 miles west of Detroit. Police are investigating, but they say the shooting appears to be accidental.

Police Chief Steven Fisher tells WWMT-TV that the father, 41-year-old Kevin Dunn, was cleaning the rusty gun. Fisher says it had been in storage for some time and the father had forgotten that there was a round in it.

The boy was struck in the head when the gun went off. He had been home sick from school.

You can’t FIX stupid!

Excuse me?? “the father had forgotten that there was a round in it” is NOT an excuse, not in any way, shape, form or fashion. This DAD is an IDIOT. I don’t care what ANYONE says, I am sorry for the loss of life, that kid didn’t deserve this, but his father was a freaking IDIOT!

The very 1st rule of gun safety is, ALWAYS assume the weapon IS loaded. ALWAYS! That’s not an advisory, it is a hard and fast rule.

Even if I am looking at a brand new weapon in a gun shop, even if I see the guy behind the counter *check* the weapon, I check it too. My son is a soldier and a Sheriffs Deputy. He is highly trained and skilled in the use of weapons. He is very SAFE with his weapons and even knowing that, I won’t accept a gun from his hands to mine without 1st checking it for a live round, and vice versa.

Right here is where I am quite likely going to piss off the most staunch 2A supporters, but if they can’t see the reasoning for this, too bad. SOME people do NOT need to be allowed to have guns, not even a BB Gun, this idiot father is one of them. Gun safety training MUST be a requirement for ALL gun owners, and judging from this story, and similar ones of late, remedial training isn’t a bad idea either, at least for some folks.

This isn’t truly a 2A story but some will make it into one. The gun grabbers will say that this guy is an example of why no one needs to have a gun. The 2A folks will say he was within his rights to have the gun. I say the STUPID guy needs to be tied to a post and horse whipped until there is nothing left but his bindings.

That *horse whipped* thing?? Ya know, maybe you really CAN fix stupid…

I was in our local shop last week, filling out some papers, and this moron….I guess he was about 20 or so, was checking out something with a very long barrel. I asked him 3 times to stop pointing the freakin’ thing at me to look down the barrel. The owner of the shop finally took it out of his hands and informed in to NEVER point anything at anyone ever again. Then told him he needed to leave. I couldn’t believe it! He was talking big prior to this incident, trying to sound like he knew what he was doing. Obviously, he did not! Even a novice like me knows better than to EVER point a weapon at a person, even if you THINK it is unloaded, especially with your finger on the trigger. Unless, of course, you intend to fire it with the intention of GREAT bodily harm.

I like how the story says “The gun went off”. Like they have a mind of their own and can just do so of their own volition.

Somebody put their finger on the trigger and pulled it. And the media isn’t biased…..

Rule Number 8 of IMHO firearms safety: No Matter how trustworthy he may seem NEVER give your gun to a monkey!

Rule number ONE of gun cleaning: remove the magazine and Check the action twice to be sure that there are no live rounds that could accidentally be fired.

    No Freaking excuses!

I have to agree with you Fred 100%. Why is it that we can teach our children gun safety, and the proper handling of a weapon and there are too many idiots out there who cannot even master the basics? ALWAYS ASSUME THAT THE GUN IS LOADED!

The problem is- it ain’t against the law to be stupid. Fix that, and we eliminate these incidents as well as every swingin’ liberal that walks the face of the earth.

Apparently this guy didn’t pay attention in his Gun Safety Class. Unloaded weapons (presumed) are just as dangerous as the Loaded ones. This is why “Gun Control Freaks” do what they do because the stupidity is rampant sometimes. This only hurts the Gun Owners that play by the rules. God Bless!

There are some who should not be armed if they don’t know to unload a gun before cleaning it. My family has been firearm trained very well. We can’t conceive of having such “accidents”.

    I’m just saying.

And Now Rule Number one for ALL firearms handling: ALWAYS point the muzzle in a safe direction. No Freaking excuses!!!

If you “always? keep the barrel pointed in the air, down or away from other people, accidental discharges can not be deadly or injure people.

And how do you clean a gun with your finger on the trigger? Finger only goes on trigger when you are ready to shoot the gun.

Always hand a gun to another person with the action open and barrel pointed up or down.

Always check a gun to see if it is loaded before doing anything with it.

    What a travesty.

My questions have already been asked - how do you “clean” a weapon with a finger on the trigger, and what kind of idiot would clean a weapon without KNOWING it was not loaded?

    Sheesh.

Let me start of by stating that I am a Law Enforcement Officer, and I think this is absolutely ridiculous.

THIS MAN should not be allowed to own a gun…period. Guns do not just “go off”.

I could place my Springfield XD-45 Tactical duty weapon on my nightstand, as I do every night, and it never just “goes off”. Never once have I ever had it just “go off” in my duty belt either.

Another thing to look at is, where was his “muzzle awareness”? Why the hell was the gun even pointed at the boy anyway?

    Basic firearm rules…
    1) always assume a weapon is loaded unless you have inspected it yourself.
    2) always keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction
    3) don’t allow IDIOTS who can’t obey rules 1 and 2 to own guns.

There’s nothing I can think of to say that hasn’t already been said. People like that hurt everybody not only around them, but also to our cause. That man deserves everything coming to him and more. His wife should leave him if she hasn’t already. He should be physically marked same as pedophiles should be so that he can never be around firearms again. Hell-just wipe em off the face of the earth. OOPS-here I go on a side rant.

We should take all guns and throw them in garbage, Guns kill people don’t ! If it werent for gun;s there’d be no wars and we could all live together in our Messiah’s kingdom to have orgies of love and share our bounty with all people green yellow brown…..”"” AAAAARRRRRRRRGHHHHHH!!!

You know the libs live for these stories and that’s the typical comment you’d find at the land of Koz. Sh** happens and this is one of those things, you’re right Fred, you can’t fix stupid but the libs will to legislate it /

Man I see your temp there in the sidebar woo, it’s actually 63 here today in Chicago, you know what that means? The Global warming Nimrods have seen their shadows and will emerge from their burrows soon……

That’s such a sad story. The father is going to have a hard time for the rest of his life. I’ve never understood why things like this happen. He’ll have guilt until, and if he’s ever able to forgive himself. Which I do hope he is able to do so that he may have a peace of mind.

I’m a 2A supporter, this was just a terrible incident.

I’ve never understood why things like this happen.

    Can you say “STUPID”?

Can you say “Would die if breathing were not a reflex”?

This was NOT an accident, it was an act of sheer stupidity, I feel bad for the kid and the rest of the family but I feel nothing but disdain for this STUPID son of a bitch that let his STUPIDITY kill his son…

I am NOT a GOOD person, I hope the rotten son of a bitch is tormented by this for every minute of whatever is left of his miserable life…

And then I hope he blows his OWN head off…

I’ve never understood how you could have a round in the chamber while cleaning.
The first thing I do is clear the barrel for the rod- which happens to clear the chamber- before I do anything else.

OR are these brains rubbing an oily rag over the outside and calling it ‘cleaning’?
