An unofficial candidate woos Iowa

August 18th, 2007 . by TexasFred

DES MOINES - Following in the path of Mitt Romney, Rudolph W. Giuliani, Hillary Rodham Clinton and a host of other presidential candidates, Fred D. Thompson punched his ticket at the Iowa State Fair on Friday, acting very much the candidate despite legal restrictions on his political activity.

This was in no uncertain terms a debut for Mr. Thompson. Rather than merely delivering a talk to supporters, he was engaged this time in what could not have been mistaken for anything other than retail campaigning as he mingled through the crowd at the fair, a must-stop for any serious presidential contender.

But if it was a debut, it was an unusual one: Mr. Thompson was shaking hands but, having not yet declared his candidacy, was barred by federal regulations from asking for votes. Nor can he advertise to promote his political ambitions, and so there were no “Thompson for president” bumper stickers or lapel pins to hand out.

The most his campaign could say on the placards it distributed was “I’m with Fred.” And hundreds who were with Fred showed up, along with the simply curious, on a balmy day here to watch and listen as he stumped without stumping. If nothing else, Mr. Thompson proved that he could walk a fine line in his brown loafers even as he aimed his pitch toward the conservative core of the Republican Party.

An unofficial candidate woos Iowa

MSNBC has already explained the reason why FDT is running his campaign the way he is, Fred Thompson’s undeclared campaign, I’m starting to think that MSNBC is FDT’s unofficial horn tooter, and that’s a good thing too, this is great exposure, and it’s free, that’s a good price… :)

When FDT does announce and this becomes an official horse race, the rest of the Republican field needs to start putting in their bid to be FDT’s vice president, because that’s the only hope they’ll have when FRED throws it ALL in the race…

I initially was a supporter of Tom Tancredo, I love his immigration policy and his stand on ILLEGAL immigration, but Tom is basically unelectable, he just doesn’t have the ’stroke’ to get into the BIG show, and that’s a shame, but Conservatives and Repubs need to concentrate on someone that CAN win against whoever the Dem candidate may be, and if there is anyone out there calling themselves ‘conservative’ and supporting McCain or Guiliani, please rethink your position, all either one of those guys is, is a RINO, just a version of Dem Lite, and not all that Lite if you get right down to it…

When Bush was elected the 1st time, he inherited a mess, and it got worse with the attacks of 9-11, but he still had a Republican Senate and House and he started off pretty well, as things progressed Bush not only had Republican control of BOTH houses, he had a Conservative majority on the SCOTUS, and he blew it all, he wasted the most wonderful opportunity a Republican POTUS could ever have…

Now we have to regain control of both houses and we MUST retain control of the White House, I honestly believe that in the coming months we’re all going to see that Fred D. Thompson is the man that can get it done, and I don’t think he would throw away a chance to do more good for this nation than any president in history, unlike Bush, I think FDT will take this nation on to a new level of greatness, I think he will restore our level of RESPECT in the worlds eyes…

All I can say is I will be a whole lot happier when FDT gets in the race, or even if he says no thanks. Come on Fred!

I like Tancredo’s seemingly-severe (but logical) anti-immigration stance but, as I wrote some time ago and was taken to task by some, he IS in fact unelectable. My guess is that Fred comes to town officially on Labor Day. Some say that he has much to make up for; in my opinion, if he’s smart (like a fox), he’ll do what he’s done quite nicely in the past few months: play the blogs, play the internet, play the YouTube videos — he seems to have a facile understanding of the New Media and how it is to be utilized. ‘Course, it doesn’t hurt that the entire NATION knows his face, as well as his voice for fill-ins on Paul Harvey.
