Military is ‘baiting’ insurgents in Iraq

September 24th, 2007 . by TexasFred

(WASHINGTON POST) - A Pentagon group has encouraged some U.S. military snipers in Iraq to target suspected insurgents by scattering pieces of “bait,” such as detonation cords, plastic explosives and ammunition, and then killing Iraqis who pick up the items, according to military court documents.

The classified program was described in investigative documents related to recently filed murder charges against three snipers who are accused of planting evidence on Iraqis they killed.

“Baiting is putting an object out there that we know they will use, with the intention of destroying the enemy,” Capt. Matthew P. Didier, the leader of an elite sniper scout platoon attached to the 1st Battalion of the 501st Infantry Regiment, said in a sworn statement. “Basically, we would put an item out there and watch it. If someone found the item, picked it up and attempted to leave with the item, we would engage the individual as I saw this as a sign they would use the item against U.S. Forces.”

In documents obtained by The Washington Post from family members of the accused soldiers, Didier said members of the U.S. military’s Asymmetric Warfare Group visited his unit in January and later passed along ammunition boxes filled with the “drop items” to be used “to disrupt the AIF [Anti-Iraq Forces] attempts at harming Coalition Forces and give us the upper hand in a fight.”

Eugene Fidell, president of the National Institute of Military Justice, said such a baiting program should be examined “quite meticulously” because it raises troubling possibilities, such as what happens when civilians pick up the items.

Personally, I have NO objections to ‘baiting’ these insurgents and blowing them to hell and back, I think it’s a great tactic, cheap, easy and effective…

And I have no problem with the MSM putting the story out there for ALL to read once they get it, that’s what the MSM does, they stab the U.S. troops in the back and get as many killed as they possibly can so we’ve come to expect that type of thing from the MSM, typical, SNAFU…

The problem I have is with the dirty, rotten, no good son of a bitch within the U.S. military that GAVE the MSM this story, he/she needs to be stood up against a wall and shot, poste haste…

“In a country that is awash in armaments and magazines and implements of war, if every time somebody picked up something that was potentially useful as a weapon, you might as well ask every Iraqi to walk around with a target on his back,” Fidell said.

If they pick up a weapon, of any kind, they ARE the enemy, and this Fidell guy in an insurgent supporter apparently, an empowerment freak…

If we have plans that work, and we can kill the enemies facing us in Iraq, then we have good plans, and it’s well past time for the USA to have some sort of success in the KILLING of our enemies, we’ve damn sure not had a lot of success making them our PC buddies…

I read it in the Washington Post when a co-worker showed me. Sure enough, it was also available to read online. Printing tactics, bad. Printing classified, bad. Printing enemy propaganda, bad.
To top it all off, they will no doubt give Iminajihad the front page tomorrow and spread his lies.
Unfortunately the WaPo is my source for money saving coupons, and of course, cartoons (Pearls Before Swine and Get Fuzzy).

I’ve got this on my tidbits today. You can use this trick to shoot deer although most hunters frown on it. However using it on terrorists or would be terrorists is just good tactics. Of course now days good tactics are considered to be ‘unfair’ or ‘mean’, as though war were a mediocre football game, with instant replay.

I wish they knew who this product of inferior breeding was so they could send him/her to Afghanistan and let the troops in on what he/she did. I can guarantee that person’s life wouldn’t be worth a plug nickel. Nothing pisses me off more that someone from withing leaking classified information. Those people need to be shot for treason as that would put a quick stop to their leaking information. How many troops will now die because this son of a dog leaked this information.

Baiting is not a new tactic. It’s just been “formally” accepted it looks like.
