Woman, 90, shoots self inside foreclosed home

(CNN) — A 90-year-old Akron, Ohio, woman who shot herself as sheriff’s deputies tried to evict her from her foreclosed home became a symbol of the nation’s home mortgage crisis Friday.

Addie Polk is being treated at Akron General Medical Center after shooting herself at least twice in the upper body Wednesday afternoon, her city councilman said.

U.S. Rep. Dennis Kucinich, D-Ohio, mentioned Polk on the House floor Friday during debate over the latest economic rescue proposal.

“This bill does nothing for the Addie Polks of the world,” Kucinich said after telling her story. “This bill fails to address the fact that millions of homeowners are facing foreclosure, are facing the loss of their home. This bill will take care of Wall Street, and the market may go up for a few days, but democracy is going downhill.”

I never heard one word from U.S. Rep. Dennis Kucinich that I could totally agree with until now, but Mr. Kucinich just blasted this one out of the park! And as a further surprise, Kucinich voted NO on the bailout bill, BOTH times!

In 2004, Polk took out a 30-year, 6.375 percent mortgage for $45,620 with a Countrywide Home Loan office in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. The same day, she also took out an $11,380 line of credit.

And it’s people like Countrywide that this ridiculous bailout bill is going to save, the most STUPID business people this nation could ever produce.

Countrywide extended a 30 year loan to a woman that was 86 years old at the time the loan and credit line were issued. Did Countrywide believe that Miss Polk was going to live to the age of 116 and be able to pay this loan, off or were they banking, no pun intended, on the fact that Miss Polk was 86 and that they, Countrywide, were going to win no matter HOW this debacle turned out?

It is my personal belief that this is one of those bad situations that has caused our nation to suffer the financial woes we are seeing, and until such time that we, as a nation, can demand, and get, FULL financial responsibility from our banking and mortgage institutions, as well as our Senate, Congress and White House, we will NEVER emerge from this crisis, we will only sink further into the pit of SOCIALISM!

The public is complicit as well Fred. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know if a couple making a combined $100,000 a year can afford a, for example, $5,300 monthly mortgage. People were stupid and they were greedy and they believed they DESERVED a new house and that somehow, magically, it would all “work out” simply because they “wanted” it to.

Are we ALL complicit BZ?? Even those of us that SCREAMED at our Senators and Congressmen?? Telling them DON’T DO IT?? All of the public or what?? Are YOU responsible BZ? Some specificity would go a long way, I hate generalities…

As I indicated, specifically those who wanted the homes and accepted the homes with ignorance. Borrowers who went to lenders knowing full well they couldn’t afford the “vig”, so to speak. The “vigorish.” In many cases these people WOULD have gotten a better deal with leg-breakers. Those people, not those who yelled for no “bailout.” The people who helped CREATE this nightmare in the first place.
